What’s in a Tune-Up?

“I think I need a tune-up.”

It’s a common question—and a tricky one to answer. Older bikes with carburetors and manual ignition systems needed regular tuning. But today’s motorcycles are different.

Most modern bikes come with electronic ignition, fuel injection, and onboard electronics. There’s not much to tune in the traditional sense.

So what do you actually need?

It’s Not Really a Tune-Up—It’s a Service

If you check your owner’s manual, you’ll find a maintenance schedule. It’s based on either distance travelled or time. It’s not about tweaking things—it’s about inspecting and replacing parts as needed.

That’s what we focus on at Imperial. Not guessing. Not “tuning.” Just proper service, done right.

We offer two main types:

Minor Service

This is the most common type of service. It includes:

  • Changing all fluids (oil, coolant, brake, clutch)
  • Checking the charging system
  • Lubricating and adjusting key components
  • Inspecting brakes, cables, tires, and more

Full Service

This goes a step further. It includes everything in a minor service, plus:

  • Spark plug replacement
  • Air filter check or replacement
  • Valve clearance inspection, if due by mileage
  • Anything else listed in the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule

What Should You Get?

If you’re not sure what kind of service your bike needs, check the manual. Every manufacturer provides a detailed chart based on distance and time. It’ll tell you exactly what to check and when.

Still not sure? Bring your bike in. Our mechanics will ask the right questions and guide you toward what makes sense for your ride.

Every bike needs service. Whether you ride a sportbike, cruiser, or something vintage, regular maintenance will keep you safe and save you money down the line.
